Hard to Understand

I'm listening to an audiobook titled The New York Trilogy by American writer Paul Auster. The audiobook consists of three stories. The first one was fine for me. I managed to understand the story. But the second one, Ghosts, is too hard to understand for me. The story is very complicated. I feel lack of English comprehensive ability.
